Who shapes the exquisite beauty of Sabino Canyon?
The history of Sabino Canyon can be dated back to 12 million years ago when the anta Catalina mountain range started its formation. However, the formation got ceased around the Tucson valley area later. About 6000 to 8000 years ago, a variety of present-day wildlife began to appear. And the Native American Hohokam people made Sabino Canyon their home. In 1887, an earthquake in Mexico displaced the massive boulders lining the canyon walls. During the Great Depression, Sabino Dam and nine bridges over Sabino Creek were built by the Works Progress Administration and Emergency Relief Administration. What does Sabino Canyon have to offer?
We barely can think of a better way to spend family outing than taking the tram up to Sabino Canyon and then hiking down. The tram travels for approximately 3.8 miles into the foothills of the Santa Catalina Mountains with nine stops along the way. The road branches off into a variety of trails which are a favorite for both hikers and bicyclists. Sabino Canyon trails are open to public from 9:00 am to around 4:30 pm all year round. And the shuttles arrive on average every half an hour.
The other tram ride along Bear Canyon Trail leads to the trailhead of Seven Fall. This non-narrated ride travels for approximately 2 miles with three stops along the way. Bear Canyon Trail furnishes visitors with spectacular views of the Sabino Dam and Seven Falls. The trail is open 356 days a year and trams are available every hour on average.
These diversified trails, ranging from easy to difficult, can accommodate hikers and bicyclists of all levels. If you feel reluctantly to move, take the informative tram rides. Need to take a break on your way? Picnic areas are scattered along both Sabino Canyon Trail and Bear Canyon Trail. Grills will be provided and please watch out for the fire! You can even stay overnight in Sabino Canyon. Camping is allowed only in designated areas. Yet the climate there may not be pleasant sometimes. In summer, the canyon experiences desert temperatures. While in winter, it can be snowy and frosty. This area is much more humid than most other Sonoran Desert regions due to the two annual rainy seasons.
Evening rides are available during the months of April, May, June, September, October and November which are likely to offer visitors a chance to see Sabino Canyon from a different perspective. It can be really interesting to watch animals prowling around the cool desert floor under the glowing moon. Only three nights per month are available for evening rides. Seats are limited.
