Docents

Docents at the zoo work on the zoo grounds, educate visitors about issues upon wildlife and natural preservation & conservation. They must be 18 years old or above, able to attend an 8 week training course which happens once or twice every year. Docents don't have to work with the zoo keepers or behind the scenes, on the contrary, they are in direct contact with guests and provide first-hand information. Specifically:

- They may need to take artifacts, such as pictures, feathers, to the exhibits and use these objects to encourage the visitors to get involved in conversation.

- Docents may be on patrol throughout the zoo, providing answers to visitors' questions, or work at the Information Center in the front plaza, offering help or information to guests.

- They are able to assist in special events at the zoo.

- Trained docents should be able to handle simple animal displays for educational purpose.

- They should be able to conduct a slide show in the education building.

Teen Volunteers

The major functions of teen volunteers are the same with those of docents, while the only difference between the two is that teen volunteers must be 13 to 18 years and be able to commit to volunteering for at least one year. In addition, the zoo internship furnishes college students with a unique opportunity to work in a zoo atmosphere. Interns at the zoo work behind the scenes with the zoo keepers for one semester. That is to say, they are responsible for cleaning animal exhibits, feeding animals, taking care of birds in aviaries and bird breeding area, assisting zoo keepers in daily tasks, and other routine duties. All applicants must be a junior or senor student at an admitted college or university, and able to get credit for a semester's work.

However, please note that 2012 internship recruitment will begin in the spring of 2012, therefore, Reid Park Zoo doesn't accept intern application currently.
