
El Tour De Tucson: One of the Largest Road Bicycling Events in the United States
El Tour de Tucson, Arizona is a major annual bicycling event in the U.S that attracts thousands of participants from all over the country. The bicycling event was introduced in the year 1983 by a young man Richard De Bernardis, as a casual fund-raising initiative to publicize his newly-founded bicycling events business.
The event turned out to be a major hit and his company became renowned as the Perimeter Bicycling Association of America that conducts bicycling events to encourage cyclists travel to various national and international tourist destinations, transcending all geographical boundaries.
The event takes place every November and witnesses anywhere between 8,000 and 10,000 participants. This event also makes Tuscan one of the best cycling destinations in the U.S. Those participating in the race are classified into four parts based on their level of competency. They can select one of the four specified distances they wish to ride such as 35 miles, 80 miles and 109 miles. Winners are selected from each category.
There is also a special kids' race that cover a distance of 4 miles. The racers have to traverse through moderately hilly routes, zig zag pathways and also flat terrains and come back to the starting point within a specific time frame.
At present, the El Tour has gained heights of its popularity, as it continues to raise funds with the help of this sports event. It has raised funds for various organizations such as Tu Nidito that serves seriously ill children and adult, American Parkinson Disease Association, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Water For People, to name a few.
